In this sharpening skill-building class, we’ll aim to clear the smoke around the topic of achieving and maintaining sharp cutting edges on woodworking chisels and plane irons. Students will learn how to assess the quality of cutting edges, and how good sharpening habits can improve the quality of your work. We’ll focus on when to grind and sharpen, and ways to get back to work quickly. We’ll cover common sharpening products, providing good options for every budget. Particular attention will be paid to chisels, plane irons but we'll also discuss edge geometry of other cutting tools such as gouges, axes and knives. Students are encouraged to bring 1-2 of their own chisels/irons to work on during class.
